It is important to note that the BMI calculator for children and teenagers is different in comparison to the adult version. Although it is based on weight and height however, it also takes into account age and gender. That's because male and female size and weight vary during growth and development. For children, BMI is expressed as a percentile as compared to other children with the same age and gender

Way to improve health
If your BMI indicates you're obese or overweight, you can reduce your BMI , by losing weight. This can be achieved by following standard weight-loss tips including:
- Consuming healthy food. Choose lean meats or fruits, veggies, along with whole-grain grains. Reduce alcohol, sugar refined foods, sodas, and juices. Consume fewer calories.
- Regularly exercising.This includes cardio and weight-bearing exercises for building muscle and lose weight. This can be effective in reducing belly fat. Belly fat raises the risk for certain health conditions. Always talk to your doctor before beginning an exercise program.
- Be aware of portion control. Don't eat too much in between meals and snacks.
If your child's BMI is excessive (above the 85 1st percentile), talk with your doctor about ways you can assist him or her shed weight.
Things to think about
If your BMI indicates you're overweight or fat, you may be at risk of developing certain health issues. These include arthritis, heart disease and certain cancers. BMI doesn't have the ability to diagnose disease. However, it's an important metric that should inspire you to engage in a meeting with your physician regarding how to lose weight and lower your BMI.
